Haemostatic dressings and Tourniquets

The European Resuscitation Council issued guidelines in October 2015 that stated: "Use a tourniquet when direct wound pressure cannot control severe external bleeding in a limb. Training is required to ensure the safe and effective application of a tourniquet." Similar guidance was given for haemostatic dressings. These guidelines follow evidence-based research into the benefits of stopping catastrophic bleeding as soon as possible. If all First Aiders are trained in the application of tourniquets, then many lives will be saved in the future when a major event takes place. We wholeheartedly agree with the delivery of this training, and our First Aid courses now contain training on using haemostatic dressings and tourniquets, in addition to AEDs whilst performing CPR.
